Alameda County 3rd Community Meeting

2011-02-15

The California Redistricting Commission is expected to begin holding public hearings this spring. Due in part to a strong effort to recruit AAPI applicants, four AAPIs were randomly drawn to serve on the 14-member Commission. Nine votes are required to approve redistricting maps and we cannot take any votes for granted.

Our task is to present cogent mapping proposals that place neighboring AAPI communities in common legislative districts that allow us a major clout in electing and influencing candidates. We oppose maps that fragment our communities into multiple districts and diluting our strength. We encourage community members to attend the hearings. We will give strong testimonies that provide documentation and justification for the maps.

Prior to providing testimonies, we will be discussing a proposed redistricting map for our community. Based on past discussions, the Asian Pacific American Legal Center staff is preparing draft redistricting maps for the community to first review on Feb. 15th. These maps will be compiled into a statewide CAPAFR mapping proposal that will be reviewed a final time at CAPAFR meetings before its submission to the Commission. We invite you to join us!
